NCCR Digital Fabrication

The National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) Digital Fabrication is Switzerland’s initiative to lead the development and integration of digital technologies within the fields of architecture and construction. NCCRs are multi-centre research organisations, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) for a period of up to 12 years, with the aim of positioning Switzerland as a world leader in innovative research.

The NCCR Digital Fabrication links five ITA professorships with 22 interdisciplinary professorships from ETH Zurich and across Switzerland. Covering the fields of architecture, civil engineering, mechanical and robotics engineering, materials science, computer science and control systems engineering, the NCCR Digital Fabrication has cultivated a truly collaborative network.

Due to its unique position hosted at ITA, the NCCR Digital Fabrication is able to contribute significant external expertise, and fosters collaborations across its wide international research network. Through the partnership between the NCCR Digital Fabrication and the ETH Department of Architecture a number of actions have been conceived, funded and brought to completion, including: new professorships within ITA, large scale infrastructure acquisitions, support for spin-off and research commercialisation projects, and the development and construction of architectural demonstrators such as the DFAB HOUSE.
