ITA Fellows Interviews 2023
In 2023, we met up with four of our ITA Fellows, who joined the institute in years 2020 to 2022. We asked them about what brought them here, what is their research about, and what their experience of doing a doctorate here at ITA has been so far.
An interview with Ayca Duran
Ayca is a Doctoral Fellow at the Institute of Technology in Architecture, ETH Zürich. She received the Architecture & Technology Doctoral Fellowship in 2022. She works within the Architecture & Building Systems research group, led by Prof. Arno Schlüter, and her research is part of the Powering the City module of Future Cities Lab Global and focuses on the application of Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPVs). She holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Architecture from METU.
An interview with Agostino Nickl
Agostino is a Doctoral Fellow at the Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA), ETH Zürich. He received the Architecture & Technology Doctoral Fellowship in 2021. Currently, Agostino is a researcher within the Digital Architectonics research group, led by Prof. Ludger Hovestadt. Prior to joining ITA, he worked at Arup Digital Studio in London, an interdisciplinary design practice, and taught Architectural Design at the Oxford School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture and Videogame Urbanism Theory at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL. Agostino holds a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Leibniz University in Germany, and a Master’s degree in Architecture from The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, in the UK.
An interview with Chaoyu Du
Chaoyu Du is a Doctoral Fellow at the Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA), ETH Zürich. She received the Architecture & Technology Doctoral Fellowship in 2021, and is currently aresearcher within the Architecture and Structures, Block ResearchGroup (BRG), led by Prof. Philippe Block. Prior to coming to Switzerland, Chaoyu collaborated with the architectural offices TJAD and ECADI specializing in computational design, and she also produced several publications in the field of architectural theory and history. Chaoyu holds a Master’s degree in Architecture from Tongji University, and a dual Master’s degree in Urban Design from the Technical University of Berlin.
An interview with Andrea Ling
Andrea Ling is a Doctoral Fellow at the Institute of Technology in Architecture (ITA), ETH Zürich. She received the Architecture & Technology Doctoral Fellowship in 2020. Andrea works within the Digital Building Technologies research group, led by Prof. Benjamin Dillenburger. She is an architect and installation artist, founding partner of design GUILD, a Toronto-based art collective, former project lead for Philip Beesley Architect, and former research assistant and designer for Neri Oxman’s Mediated Matter Group at the MIT MediaLab. Andrea has a M.Sc from the MIT Media Lab, and M.Arch from the University of Waterloo, and has completed studies in Human Physiology at the University of Alberta.
